What is my field of research?Beside a common interest for
all aspects of marine sciences, I am specialized in the biology and
ecology of marine living ressources. In Germany, this field is called fisheries
biology.
During the last years the focus of my research was the ecology of pelagic fishes (fishes in the free water column) in the Baltic and in the North Sea. This includes species like sprat (Sprattus sprattus L.), herring (Clupea harengus L.) and cod (Gadus morhua L.). These fishes are the most important fishes species in the Baltic and partially in the North Sea. These investigations were carried out in the framework of the German GLOBEC-Project. The aim was to understand recruitment variability of marine fish under the influence of climate. To study the distribution and the behaviour of pelagic fishes, I often used echo-sounders. This technique uses sound, which is transferred into the water. Therefore, this kind of research is often referred as hydroacoustic. In July 2006, i finished my Phd-thesis with the title: "Distribution patterns of Baltic sprat (Sprattus sprattus L.) - causes and consequences". If you are interested, you can download this thesis here. In march 2007 I was lecturer for fish biology at the "National Fisheries College" (NFA) in Kavieng (Papua Neuguinea) and at the University of Vudal (Papua Neuguinea) Since 2007, I am working at the Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries in Rostock with different tasks. Now I am the head of the fishery- and surveytechnology working group. |
